We’re pleased to announce that MCPIR received its license from the Dutch regulator in January. This means the consortium’s work to establish a comprehensive blueprint for optimising medical-grade cannabis cultivation can begin.
Four Paradise varieties have been shipped to the dedicated R&D facility in The Netherlands to begin the first stage of the trials, focusing on phenotyping, cloning and mother stock.
Paradise Seeds is one of six founding partners in MCPIR (Medical Cannabis Platform for Innovation & Research), a consortium of leading players in the Dutch horticultural and cannabis industries. Among the prominent partners in the project are lighting company Philips, Dutch nutrient company Mills, climate control experts Priva, and sustainable growing and natural pest solution pioneers, Koppert.
The project is located at the facility of another founding partner Delphy, a globally recognized agricultural consultancy firm with a rich
history of advising on the optimization of traditional crops like tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, and fruits.
The comprehensive trials conducted at MCPIR will meticulously monitor the entire cultivation process, starting from the germination of the first seed to the extraction of cannabinoids from dried flowers. Jeroen van Buren, Delphy’s Consultancy and Education Manager, highlights the significance of this project: while the knowledge about optimising the growth of traditional crops like tomatoes is around 95%, knowledge regarding cannabis cultivation is approximately 70%.
The collaboration between horticultural experts and established cannabis industry partners like Paradise Seeds will bring specialised insights to
enhance each stage of the growing process.
The dedicated R&D facility includes climate cells, a test room and a control room to conduct studies and adjustments to the cultivation process under controlled laboratory conditions.
Paradise Seeds founder Luc Krol, who has been championing the therapeutic benefits of cannabis for three decades, expresses excitement about the project: with the benefits of liberalisation, scientific advancements can now be harnessed to enhance the cultivation of the cannabis plant. Krol believes that projects like MCPIR are crucial for fully understanding the optimal methods for cannabis cultivation in order to provide patients with access to the best and most cost effective medicines in the future.
